# The Birth of the vLEI: A New Dawn in Digital ID for Legal Entities Everywhere

A GLEIF blog post by its then CEO introducing the verifiable LEI (vLEI) and tracing its development from early 2020. It describes the trust chain with GLEIF as root of trust, credentials issued through Qualified vLEI Issuers and built on KERI (Key Event Receipt Infrastructure), and previews 2022 milestones: the governance framework with Trust Over IP, field trials of beta software, and the ISO 5009 standard for official organizational roles.
