# SEDI and Client-Side Identity

A Technometria blog post arguing that client-side SSL certificates of the mid-1990s were technically sound but failed because individuals would not pay for identity proofing. It presents Utah's State-Endorsed Digital Identity (SEDI) as changing that economics, since the state can use its existing driver's license process to issue high-assurance digital identities, and argues user-held, state-backed credentials could replace passwords and centralized identity silos.
